Oxfraud

Hilary Term begins in less than a week and I have to get busy Imagining Early Modern London! I was in the Bodleian until closing time today. I felt studious. I felt like, this term, I'm gonna kick Oxfraud's ass. Then I checked my email and David said let's go to Paris this weekend and I said yeah.

After Michaelmas, Hilary, a limited term
Named after a saint who once had active sperm.

Hilary of Poitiers, an interesting story;
He was named to be Bishop with suitable glory.
This despite his being married with child,
Not only God, but the mother beguiled.

Of course at conception he was only a heathen
Later arriving at truly believin’.
It’s said he abstained for the rest of his life.
Church history’s silent on comments from wife.

Pissed off Constantius who banished him east,
A fate Hilary seemed not to mind in the least.

Proselytized Arians, converting a few,
Orientally making an awful to-do.
Arians said Jesus was no more than human
Leaving the orthodox sore-vexed and fumin’.

In the mid-1800s Pius declared he’d been clever,
Made him a Doctor.
Well, better late than never.

Good luck in your efforts through this saintly season
Even if religion plays second fiddle to reason.

I got the postcard from Paris. The two of you made me so happy. Thank you for thinking of me.
